Biography

beasley 2019A love for the animal kingdom has always been a guiding principle in Barbara Yates Beasley’s fabric collages. From a wild collection of fabric emerges the personality of her subjects. Many animals sport crazy colors that express their freedom to be themselves, and not just be a part of the pack. With her camera always at the ready, Beasley captures images of animals wherever she goes. These later become the basis for her patterns and a roadmap to the animal’s soul. Beasley says, “I try to be sensitive to how my subject is feeling and transform that into a piece that tells a story. Exploring how the turn of a head or the look in an eye can communicate volumes between our species.” By capturing and communicating a sense of joy or connection and highlighting the animal world around us, Beasley hopes to foster a deeper understanding and compassion for the animals—and for ourselves.

Beasley was born into a family of needle workers. The house where she grew up on Sugarloaf Mountain, just outside Boulder, Colorado, was filled with handwork crafted by her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. As a young child Beasley spent many hours curled up with one of the many quilts, sometimes reading but often just marveling, at the swirl of different fabrics spanning generations that had come together in this unique way. That early exposure started her on a path of creativity. Beasley was the youngest in the family with two teenage brothers not interested in entertaining a baby sister. The family dogs became her closest companions since neighbors were few and far between. The farm animals including rabbits, chickens, and goats were always a source of entertainment during the daily chores. Beasley remembers each animal had a distinctive personality. “We had a nanny named Paula that was just the sweetest goat. She loved being around people. Then there was the rooster that took every available chance to chase you around the yard.” It is Beasley’s love of animals and color that started this leg of the journey. Add to that a love of fabric, both commercial and hand-dyed and you have a 10year long love affair that shows no sign of stopping.

Beasley has work at Silverleaf Framing, 2595 Canyon Blvd., Boulder, Colorado, and with the traveling Studio Art Quilt Associates show Wild Fabrications. You can always find her work on her website, www.BarbaraYatesBeasley.com or follow her on Facebook.
